Winter In Breckenridge

A view of the slopes

The long ski season, reliable snow cover, lots of powder skiing days and a reputed 300 days of sunshine, together with the surrounding ski resorts, makes Breckenridge one of the best places to ski in the world.

A vast amount of investment in the resort has ensured an extensive and well linked ski area with express chairlifts, one of which is the new Imperial Express Super Chair that takes you to the top of peak 8, the highest chairlift in North America at 12840 ft. A new Gondola linking Peaks 7 & 8 with the center of the town is scheduled to be completed by December 2006.

This will relieve some of the congestion at the other main entry points to the system, but with our own Snowflake Lift just across the road from our apartment, none of this will affect you if you stay at Tyra Summit. It feels like our own private lift because it is only used by the people living nearby and so there is no wait. You are whisked up onto Peak 8 in minutes to mostly empty trails/pistes. Even at peak holiday times, skiing here is much less crowded than Europe and the lift lines/queues, when there are any, are amazingly well organized.

Breckenridge caters to all standards of skiing and boarding. Beginners are soon confidently tackling the wide open green and gentle pistes on Peak 9 with it's easy and slow on/off chair lifts. Intermediates will find the resort very flattering for their technique and it's cruising at it's best. Breck also has access to over 400 acres of famed expert and advanced intermediate terrain. The new Imperial Chair Lift has made access to the Double Black Diamond area of Imperial Bowl below Peak 8 much easier.

The four o'clock run

Snowboarding is big here, indeed Breck was one of the first resorts in Colorado to embrace the sport 20 years ago. There are 5 Terrain Parks for boarding with Jumps, Hits, Ramps, Fun Boxes, Rails, and many more.

Tuition and Guiding is offered by the 600 strong Ski and Ride School, (970) 453-3272. They have many programs for all ages and abilities.

Guest staying in our Apartment, at Tyra Summit, can ski home down the easy, blue four o'clock run and cut off right to the back of our building. This means that coming back for a lunch break in your own comfortable surroundings is quite possible.

Apres Ski kicks off from 3pm with Happy Hour in many Bars. Breck is a lively town at night and it's only three blocks away.
